Tinnitus   is de medische term voor   “gehoor”    -geluiden in de oren wanneer er geen externe geluiden zijn. De geluiden die u hoort, kunnen zacht of luid zijn en kunnen klinken als een fluitje, een    gefluit, een gebrul, een zoemend, gefluit, gefluister of getjilp.  Je zou zelfs kunnen denken dat hij luistert naar    de ontsnapping van lucht, stromend water, het interieur van een zeeslak of muzieknoten.

Overwegingen   Tinnitus komt vaak voor. Bijna alle mensen ervaren van tijd tot tijd een milde vorm van tinnitus, die slechts een paar minuten duurt. Constante of terugkerende tinnitus is echter stressvol en kan concentratie of slaap belemmeren.

Oorzaken   Het is niet met zekerheid bekend wat de oorzaak is dat een persoon       geluiden hoort wanneer er geen externe geluidsbron is. 

Tinnitus kan echter een symptoom zijn van bijna elk auditief probleem, zoals:  

• Oorinfecties

• Vreemde lichamen of cerumen in het oor

• Gehoorverlies door harde geluiden

•  de ziekte van Menière, een aandoening aan het binnenoor die gehoorverlies en duizeligheid veroorzaakt  

• De consumptie van alcohol, cafeïne, antibiotica, acetylsalicylzuur (aspirine) en andere medicijnen kan ook oorgeluiden veroorzaken

• Tinnitus kan aanwezig zijn met gehoorverlies. Soms is het een teken van hypertensie, allergie of bloedarmoede. Zelden is tinnitus een teken van een ernstig probleem, zoals een tumor of een aneurysma. 

Thuiszorg

Tinnitus kan worden gemaskeerd door andere geluiden: de muziek bij een laag volume, tikkende klokken of andere geluiden kan u helpen de tinnitus niet in de gaten. De buzz is vaak merkbaar wanneer je gaat liggen ‘s nachts, omdat de omgeving rustiger. 

Elk geluid in de kamer als een luchtbevochtiger, een machine die uniform lawaai of ventilator kan helpen masker tinnitus en maken het minder irriterend produceert.

• Leer enkele manieren om te ontspannen. Stress veroorzaakt geen tinnitus, maar een gestresst of angstig gevoel kan het erger maken

• Vermijd cafeïne, alcohol en tabak

• Krijg voldoende rust

• Probeer te slapen met uw hoofd omhoog in een verhoogde positie

• Hierdoor neemt de congestie in het hoofd af en kan het geluid minder opvallen

• Bescherm uw oren en gehoor om verdere schade te voorkomen

• Vermijd lawaaiige plaatsen en geluiden

• Gebruik oordopjes als u ze nodig hebt.

Raadpleeg uw arts of verpleegkundige als:  

• Geluiden in de oren beginnen na een hoofdletsel

• Geluiden aanwezig met andere onverklaarbare symptomen, zoals    duizeligheid, verlies van evenwicht, misselijkheid of braken. 

• Er is een onverklaarbare auditieve ruis die voor u vervelend is, zelfs na het toepassen van de zelfhulpmaatregelen.

• Het geluid is slechts in één oor en duurt enkele weken of langer. 

De volgende examens kunnen worden gedaan:  

• Audiologie / audiometrie om gehoorverlies te beoordelen

• CT-scan van het hoofd

• Magnetische resonantie van het hoofd • Vasculaire onderzoeken (angiografie).
