Entre todas las condiciones médicas que existen, la fibromialgia es definitivamente una de las más enigmáticas e incomprendidas.

Frecuentemente ignorada por completo y descartada como un síndrome en su propio “derecho”, la fibromialgia es una de esas condiciones médicas que aún no se comprende, ni siquiera por los investigadores médicos más conocidos del mundo.

Entendemos el hecho de que más de 5 millones de estadounidenses tienen que pasar por el dolor y los síntomas de la fibromialgia que cambian la vida a diario.

No hay cura para este síndrome y la única forma en que las personas pueden vivir sus vidas es manejando sus propios síntomas lo mejor posible. Sin embargo, todavía hay demasiados pacientes para quienes la fibromialgia ha cambiado sus vidas dramáticamente.

Fibromialgia y las explicaciones que tenemos

La dura verdad sobre la fibromialgia es que ni siquiera sabemos cómo definirla. Por supuesto, es un síndrome, lo que significa que es una colección de síntomas, pero pueden variar mucho y pueden ser tan diferentes de una persona a otra que lo que es realmente imposible saber qué es la fibromialgia.

El síntoma más común y conmovedor que experimentan las personas con fibromialgia es el dolor generalizado. Más allá de eso, hay una gran cantidad de síntomas que surgen, que pueden estar interconectados y que a veces incluso se consideran causas y factores de riesgo para este síndrome.

Además de todo, la mayoría de ellos (agrupados de ciertas maneras) son comunes a otras afecciones médicas que pueden ser comórbidas con fibromialgia.

Problemas para dormir, problemas de vejiga (y problemas urinarios en general), síndrome del intestino irritable, dolores de cabeza, fatiga, espasmos musculares, hormigueo y entumecimiento, despertar rígido, dolor en los nervios, problemas de memoria, falta de atención, ansiedad por depresión: estos son solo algunos de los síntomas que con mucha frecuencia se asocian con la fibromialgia (pero también con otras afecciones médicas, la fibromialgia se confunde o se comporta con frecuencia).

 

¿Qué causa la fibromialgia?

No hay una respuesta clara a esta pregunta. Además del hecho de que la fibromialgia es bastante difícil de diagnosticar (como se explicará más adelante), las causas de este síndrome son completamente desconocidas.

Algunos han teorizado que la fibromialgia es causada por el hecho de que los “sensores” nerviosos en el cerebro y en el sistema nervioso central son demasiado sensibles al dolor, lo que hace que los pacientes sientan dolor a niveles más altos de lo que sería normal.

Aún más, otros científicos creen que la fibromialgia es causada principalmente por factores genéticos. Según ellos, hay una muy alta incidencia de fibromialgia que aparece en múltiples miembros de la familia.

Esta teoría adopta la creencia de que existe una fuerte conexión entre ciertos genes polimórficos en el cuerpo humano y la razón por la que se desarrolla la fibromialgia, pero también admiten que los mismos genes están conectados con muchas otras afecciones relacionadas con la fibromialgia (por ejemplo, el síndrome de fatiga crónica).

Otras personas creen que los factores psicológicos y la depresión son fundamentales para descubrir por qué se desarrolla la fibromialgia. Según ellos, la alta tasa de comorbilidad entre la fibromialgia y la depresión no es accidental y esta última puede ser la causa real que conduce a la primera.

Los malos patrones de sueño también pueden ser una de las causas que conducen al desarrollo de este síndrome. Según los investigadores que adoptaron esta idea, el mal sueño puede poner patas arriba todo el cuerpo y puede hacer que sienta dolor a niveles más altos. Consecuentemente, entrarás en un círculo vicioso donde el dolor y el mal dormir están permanentemente conectados entre sí, sin dejarte sin salida.

¿Por qué los pacientes con fibromialgia experimentan dolor de cuello?

El dolor es, como se mencionó, el síntoma más común y más poderoso que experimentan los pacientes con fibromialgia. Los médicos explican el dolor en esta área como el resultado de la “activación” de un punto sensible localizado precisamente en el cuello.

Puede haber otras causas que conducen al dolor de cuello en el caso de la fibromialgia también. Por ejemplo, dormir mal también podría significar una posición errónea que puede hacer que los músculos de su cuello se tensen (y que, en consecuencia, también causen dolor).

Además, tenga en cuenta que es muy probable que desarrolle dolores de cabeza y hombros como resultado de su dolor de cuello también. Con mucha frecuencia, el dolor en el cuello está muy relacionado con las áreas que lo rodean, por lo que también puede experimentar dolor alrededor del cuello.

La fibromialgia no se puede curar (de hecho, la razón principal por la que no se puede curar está relacionada con el hecho de que no conocemos su causa). Sin embargo, se puede manejar, y esto es precisamente lo que los millones de pacientes con fibromialgia hacen a diario.

Si el dolor de cuello es uno de los síntomas que experimenta con la fibromialgia, hay ciertas cosas que puede hacer. Éstos son algunos de ellos:

1- medicamento para el dolor  El medicamento para el dolor de venta libre podría funcionar en el caso de dolor de cuello, pero asegúrese de no abusar de él, ya que incluso la aspirina más básica o el ibuprofeno pueden hacer que su cuerpo desarrolle resistencia a su uso.

2- masajes suaves.  Masajear suavemente su cuello realmente puede funcionar como un milagro sobre cómo se sentirá, así que no dude en pedirle a alguien que lo haga (o asistir a una terapia de masaje profesional, para el caso).

3- Muchas personas todavía son muy escépticas acerca de las prácticas orientales que hemos tomado prestadas,  pero su número está disminuyendo lentamente. Hay muchos pacientes que creen que la acupuntura los ha ayudado y si usted cree que podría ser una buena terapia complementaria para usted también, asegúrese de encontrar un profesional autorizado.

4- Una vez más, esto puede parecer tonto para algunos, pero el Yoga puede recorrer un largo camino cuando se trata de aliviar el dolor en diferentes áreas del cuerpo.  Dado que la mayoría de las posturas de Yoga se basan en buenos estiramientos, realmente pueden liberar la tensión en los músculos y pueden ayudarlo a deshacerse del dolor. Sin embargo, tenga en cuenta que debe practicar esto bajo la supervisión de un instructor que sepa cómo tratar a las personas que sufren de dolor crónico.
