La fibromialgia, una enfermedad ampliamente incomprendida, confunde y frustra a los pacientes y los médicos. Lo sé porque lo he visto desde ambos lados – como un médico y una mujer con la enfermedad misma.

Esta enfermedad crónica común caracterizada por dolor muscular generalizado, fatiga y niebla del cerebro. Se estima que 5 millones de estadounidenses sufren actualmente de la enfermedad, y el 90 por ciento de los diagnosticados son mujeres.

Aún así, sigue habiendo mucha confusión acerca de lo que realmente es la enfermedad y cómo se trata. Aquí hay cinco verdades acerca de la fibromialgia que no son muy conocidos, incluso por la mayoría de los médicos:

1. La fibromialgia es real y puede ser tratada – pero requiere un enfoque holístico.

La investigación sobre la fibromialgia muy por detrás de otras enfermedades, sumido por la controversia y un siglo de discusiones sobre si se trata de una enfermedad “real”.

2. No es un completo misterio.

3. La fibromialgia es principalmente un trastorno del sueño.
